Great posting on the Gov's recent business with US Sugar. I have been doing my own recent studies on the Glades. "The Swamp" is by far the best thing i've read on the history of South FL and especially the Glades. I highly recommend it.
I further recommend a trip to Everglades City. My lovely gf and i just took a weekend trip. We stayed at the Ivey House. It's not the Ritz, but it's more than ample for enjoying a piece of old Florida. If you go in the spring/summer, I'd suggest renting a boat and just exploring for a day or two.
